Visakha Bucha Day – 20 May 2016

Happy Visakha Bucha Day to everyone celebrating!

144. Vishaka Bucha

Vishaka Bucha is celebrated on the full moon of the sixth lunar month, which falls this year on the 20th of May. This is one of the most important milestones in the Buddhist calendar. Buddhist all over the world commemorate three great events: the birth, enlightenment and the passing away of Gautama Buddha, which all fell on the same date, in different years. On this day, Buddhist all over the world gather to worship and listen to sermons or make merit at temples.

On this day, devout Buddhist will rise early to offer food to monks and novices, they will listen to Dhamma preaching in the temples, set birds or fish free to get rid of bad karma, but maybe the most impressive activity of the day will be the candle-lit procession that happens after sunset at major temples throughout the country. Devout Buddhist will walk three times around the principal chapel {this is always done clockwise}, each clasping three incense sticks, a lighted candle and a lotus bud. During this time, the air is filled with burning incense and smoke from the candles as the faithful complete the most sacred of Buddhist celebrations.

If you have a chance to see this make sure to take a look, or even join. As Buddhists are always happy to welcome people during their celebrations. If you’re not interested in joining, you will probably not notice anything from these celebrations, except that plenty of shops will be closed (as it is a public holiday) and there will be a ban on the sale of alcohol across the country – so restaurants and bars are not allowed to serve alcohol during the entire day.

Enjoy the celebrations!

xxx Frei
