Phuket Picks – Lim’s Restaurant

For one of Wanderlust Magazine issues last year, my friend Vanessa set out to find some interesting restaurants on the island. She asked me to join, as she needed a photographer and didn’t mind some good company either. As I love exploring the island and finding new places for dinner, I didn’t mind joining her at all! One of the restaurants on the list was Lim’s Restaurant – a hidden gem just outside Patong –, which we still frequently visit!

Lim’s is not like any other restaurant on the island. First off, this is a place you need to know. As it’s away from the busy tourism centre, and definitely not a street you just wander in (as it’s an uphill battle to get there). Secondly, it’s not just a restaurant, but a gallery as well, with art from the talented Khun Kob (Alongkorn Poochamchote).

Khun Kob came to Phuket more than 15 years ago from the North of Thailand. Besides being a talented painter, he also runs the kitchen of Lim’s. If you talk to him, you would never know that his background is actually in political science. He talks about his food and his art as his big love.

The restaurant itself is set in a lush garden, with a little river you hear rippling in the background, where you can sit and enjoy the amazing food. Inside the smooth concrete walls make sure your eyes are fixed on the amazing abstract art pieces made by Khun Kob, A great place to be for dinner.

Food & Drinks

When visiting Lim’s make sure that you make a reservation in advance {this can be easily done online}, as Khun Kob goes to the market in the morning to find the freshest ingredients for his guests. The modern Thai cuisine offers popular Thai dishes such as Massaman Chicken Curry (surely one of my favourites), but also a few standout dishes such as Banana Flower Salad with shredded chicken, or the delicious red curry crab dish.

The drinks are great too, with several different cocktails on the menu. But I have to say for me the food was the number one reason to come back!

As said, Lim’s is located off the beaten track, which {in my opinion} makes it an even better reason to visit. It’s quiet, stylish and low key. The restaurant is off the main road from Kalim Beach on Soi 7. When driving from Patong, you’ll need to turn right after Orchid Hotel. When coming from Kamala / Surin side, you’ll need to turn left just after the small white bridge, before the Orchid Hotel.
Keep on driving uphill and in about 800 meters you’ll see the restaurant on the right side.

$$$ – there are plenty of places that offer Thai cuisine at a lower price range, but the setting, the ambience, and the quality of food at Lim’s is definitely worth the money!

{$ – fast food/self-service | $$ – casual, sit-down service | $$$ – more formal dining | $$$$ – most expensive, special occasion}

The verdict

Lim’s has been in Phuket for over 15 years, and for good reason. The food is delicious, the setting amazing and the staff very attentive and friendly. If only I could eat here every day, I would!

Verdict: 5/5
